Some considerations about Karl Popper’s criticism of Karl Marx’s historicism

The paper tries to explain how the liberal anti-historicism of Karl Popper (1902-1994), contrary to the conception that history carries some intrinsic meaning, goes against the sociological determinism of Karl Marx (1818-1883), according to the which social development is hostage to preconceived laws that would lead inexorably to scientific socialism. We will also emphasize that, in Popper's view, Marxist political impotence is inefficient in the face of what the Austrian philosopher considers to be the effective way of improving the destiny of the vast majority of men: the State's duty to prevent so many from suffering from hunger or suffering by economic ruin, allied to the reinforcement of institutions that regulate the will of power, in view of the problem of sovereignty. We conclude by showing the repercussion of these reflections in the contemporary debate from Anthony Quinton's (1925-2010) critique of the connection made by Popper between historicism and totalitarianism in Marx's thought.
