Albert Camus - a reflection on legitimate violence and the concept of revolt
Keywords:
Violence. Totalitarianism. Ethics. Logical murder. Politics.Abstract
This article aims to present the position of the French-Algerian author Albert Camus on elements that became central in the ethical and political debate of the 20th century: The legitimation of murder, logical crime, violence and terror as a technique and the emptying of human dignity deliberately. These elements are at the heart of what the author classifies as the human crisis and deeply mark the author's essay production. For this, we use essays and lectures given by Camus during the 40's and 50's where political and ethical issues lead us to reflect on: is it possible to consider legitimate murder? What led the West to such tension between premeditated murder and humanism? Through reflections arising from political essays, we also present the concept of the Revolt. Revolt is the central concept of Camus's political thought, where the author seeks to present alternatives to the ethical crisis by linking Revolt to the defense of humanism and the defense of human dignity in the face of the advance of totalitarianism.
