Elements of Augustine's thought on marriage

Augustine’s notion of matrimony developed in the middle of two polemics: 1) the controversy between Augustine and Jovinian, for whom Christian marriage is on the same meritorious level as celibacy; 2) the debate against the followers of Pelagio, for whom human nature has remained the same since it was created, so that the primordial couple’s disobedience to the Creator implies only a “fall” from merit and not from being. Among moral and political problems, Augustine establishes the goods of conjugal life, but recognizes the problem of concupiscence in the fallen human nature and the value of the celibate self-control. Married and celibate depend on divine grace.
