The dynamics of assigning social roles and irony

This article proposes a critical analysis of the centrality of the theme of social roles in Hegelian thought through the works Phenomenology of Spirit and Philosophy of Law, based on the structure of ethicality. This analysis is developed along three axes. The first axis is limited to reconstructing the concept of ethicality from the two theoretical contexts in question, recognizing their differences and, above all, their similarities; the second establishes the specific cut of the theme of social roles present in the two Hegelian works and relates it to the gender order; finally, the third axis explores a critical dimension on social roles linked to the field of feminist political debate. Based on what is developed by Seyla Benhabib, the aim is to question not only the perspectives that would point to a possible advance in relation to the dissolution of the traditional attribution of social roles, but, finally, the very limitations faced by Benhabib with regard to the aspect of irony.
