Abstract

This study offers a strictly philosophical reconstruction of the distinction between οὐσία and ἐνέργεια in Gregory Palamas, interpreting it as a coherent metaphysical proposal rather than as a merely polemical formulation of the fourteenth century. Through a close philological analysis of the Triads and the Capita, the categories of διάκρισις, ἐνέργεια, μετουσία, and ὑπάρξις are examined, demonstrating that the distinction does not entail ontological composition or substantial duplication but rather a real modal differentiation. In critical dialogue with Étienne Gilson’s account of participation and with contemporary objections concerning divine simplicity (Plested, Weinandy), the article argues that Palamism articulates an intensive ontology of communicative presence. The
plurality of energies does not multiply the principle but expresses its non-fragmentable fullness at the level of mode of subsistence. Simplicity is thus reinterpreted as absence of composition rather than absence of modal differentiation, allowing for a constitutive relationality of being without compromising absolute unity. The study concludes that the Palamite distinction represents an
alternative relational ontology within the broader tradition of Western metaphysics.
