Essay on the governance of algorithms: the governance of the black box

This essay articulates the notion of what algorithms are with the theses of the French philosopher Michel Foucault, especially with the concepts of governance, power, and resistance as found in his works. During this process, we also utilize the notion of the black box as developed by the thinker Vilém Flusser in an attempt to philosophically dissect the functioning of the algorithm. The aim of this essay is, therefore, to analyze the role of algorithms in our lives, particularly in the context of social networks, to determine if there is a power relationship between the individual and technology as established in the Foucauldian perspective.
