Abstract

This article proposes a reflection on the central theme of Simone Weil’s (1909–1943) philosophy: attention. At the core of her philosophical reflection and life practice, the concept of "attention" (l’attention) emerges as the organizing axis of her worldview, transcending mere technical concentration to reach metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical dimensions. The analysis of the concept of attention in Weil’s work will focus particularly on the essay “Reflections on the Right Use of School Studies with a View to the Love of God,” investigating how this category operates as an ethical virtue and an antidote to dehumanization and the emptying of the soul. Drawing from a bibliographical, exploratory, and analytical approach, this study examines the etymology of the term based on Mary G. Dietz's analysis, correlating the French words for attention (l’attention) and waiting (attente), while also investigating the conceptual articulation between attention and the category of Malheur (affliction). Attention in Weil is a passive and "negative effort" that does not dispense with the will, but rather consists of suspending thought to leave it empty, motionless, and open to being penetrated by the object in its naked truth.
