The dialectical tension between secularization and religion in Jurgen Habermas

Abstract

In this article, a dialogue will be proposed between the concepts of secularization and religion in Jurgen Habermas. For the German author, modernity adhered to the post- metaphysical feeling, thus rejecting the intuition and balance that religious assumptions promote in the individual's life. From this, what we see is an imbalance between autonomous modernity and religious heritage in the democratic State. To this end, the establishment of the post-metaphysical era is a verifiable fact, however, this fact cannot be evidenced as an ultimate structure for the State. From now on, for Habermas, the existence of religious resources is important for the creation of ultimate meanings, even in a secularized modernity, that enable intersubjective relationships that promote the common good.
