Strangeness and requests from the world-of-life: the other in the constitution of ipseity

Abstract

The article in the form of a theoretical study is dedicated to examining the topic of the strange in the philosophies of Edmund Husserl and Paul Ricoeur from the phenomenological point of view. The motivation for this problem is given by the position of Bernhard Waldenfels, a German phenomenologist, where the problem of the other or stranger constitutes a characteristic appeal of the world-of-life and that demands responsiveness. In Husserl, in the V Cartesian Meditation, the presence of the stranger alters ipseity and remains in the perceptual analysis. In Paul Ricoeur, the phenomenon of the strange or the other, in turn, is a constituent element of ipseidade. The problem raised by Bernhard Waldenfels finds a responsive attitude in the attestation of Paul Ricoeur's self. Thus, the hermeneutic graft in phenomenology is evidenced, more precisely, the progressive transition from epistemology, Husserlian perspective, to ethics, Ricoeurian perspective, in the phenomenological analysis of the stranger. Attestation is, therefore, the recognition of the other in the originality of his strangeness.
